Your Life Canvas: What Will You Paint Next?

Life has a funny way of throwing us curveballs. Sometimes, they’re gentle lobs we can easily catch. Other times, they’re fast pitches that knock the wind out of us, leaving us feeling breathless, broken, and unsure of which way is up.

I recently sat with a client, let's call her Sarah, who was navigating one of those powerful curveballs. After 30 years of marriage, she discovered her husband had been unfaithful for much of their shared life. The revelation, while perhaps not entirely shocking given her long-held suspicions, hit her like a ton of bricks. The world as she knew it crumbled, replaced by a swirling vortex of fear, doubt, and the crushing worry that her life, as she knew it, was effectively over. Her pain was palpable, her devastation profound. She felt adrift, lost in a sea of uncertainty.

"What now?" was the unspoken question hanging in the air. "Who am I without this life I've built?"

As we spoke, I could see the weight of her history, the ingrained patterns of thought, and the deep-seated fears that had taken root over the decades. It's so easy, isn't it, to become defined by our circumstances, by our relationships, by the expectations we and others place upon us?

But in that moment of profound vulnerability, a different image came to mind. I looked at Sarah, truly looked at her, and saw not a defeated woman, but a woman standing at a crucial juncture.

"Sarah," I asked gently, "imagine you have a blank canvas stretched out before you. And in your hand, you hold a paintbrush. What will you paint?" The question hung in the air, a stark contrast to the chaos she was experiencing. A blank canvas. Limitless possibilities.

It wasn't about erasing the past; that's impossible. But it was about recognizing that while the previous painting might have been marred, or even destroyed, the future remained unblemished, waiting for her unique touch.

This metaphor resonated deeply with her, and I hope it resonates with you, too, no matter what "curveball" life has thrown your way.

You are the artist of your life.

No matter how shattered your world may seem, no matter how much fear and doubt cloud your vision, you always hold the paintbrush. You have the power to decide what colors you'll use, what strokes you'll make, what vision you'll bring to life.

Perhaps the previous painting was a collaboration that went awry. Maybe it was a masterpiece you adored that suddenly fell off the wall. Whatever the scenario, this moment, right now, is your opportunity to begin again. To create something new, something authentic, something that truly reflects who you are and who you aspire to be.

It takes courage to pick up that brush when your hands are shaking. It takes faith to dip it into a new color when all you see is gray. But on that blank canvas lies the promise of rediscovery, resilience, and a life painted in your own vibrant hues. What will your next masterpiece look like?
