When Life Feels Like Too Much… Paint Something

Lately, life has felt… full. Not bad. Not wrong. Just a lot. You know that feeling, when your mind keeps spinning, jumping from one thing to the next, trying to solve, fix, anticipate, manage… and somewhere in all of that, you realize you haven’t actually stopped in a while.
I hit that point recently.
And instead of trying to “think” my way through it (because let’s be honest, that’s usually what we do), I felt this pull to do something different. Something simple. Something creative. So I started painting.
Not in a “I’m suddenly an artist” kind of way. More like… I found some paint-by-number canvases, got way more excited than expected, and ordered them immediately. No overthinking. No strategy. Just a quiet, “this feels good, let’s do it.”
And what I didn’t expect… was how much it would teach me.
It’s Messy Before It’s Beautiful
At the beginning, the canvas looks chaotic. Random shapes, strange outlines, colors that don’t seem to belong anywhere. If you judged it too early, you’d think, this is going nowhere.
But then… you keep going. You fill in one section. Then another. And suddenly, something starts to take shape. Not perfectly. Not all at once. But gradually.
And it hit me, this is exactly what life feels like when you're in the middle of something new, something big, or something uncertain. It’s not supposed to make sense right away.
There Are Steps for a Reason
Each number. Each section. Each layer. You can’t skip ahead and expect it to work. You can’t rush the process and still get the same result. You just… do the next part. And that’s where so many of us get stuck in life. We want the finished version. The clarity. The outcome. But the truth? You don’t need the whole picture. You just need the next step.
It Comes Together Faster Than You Think
There was a moment where I stepped back and thought, wait… this is actually turning into something.
What felt slow at the beginning suddenly picked up. The pieces started connecting. The image became clear. And it made me wonder how often that’s happening in our lives…We just don’t pause long enough to notice.
Rest Isn’t Quitting
This one got me. When I got tired and tried to push through anyway, my lines got sloppy. I made mistakes. I had to go back and fix things that didn’t need to be messed up in the first place. Sound familiar? Sometimes the most productive thing you can do… is stop. Take a break. Step away. Reset.
You come back clearer. More focused. And everything flows better.
You’re Allowed to Be New at Something
There was a moment where I caught myself wanting it to look better… faster.
And then I laughed a little. Because I’m learning. Of course it’s not perfect.
And that’s the point. We forget that it’s okay to be new. To try something just because it feels good. To not have it all figured out. You’re not behind. You’re in process.
This Isn’t About Painting
It is… but it isn’t. Because what I realized sitting there, brush in hand, focusing on one small section at a time… is that this is exactly what I needed. Not another plan. Not more pressure. Not more thinking. Just a reminder: Everything you’re creating, your life, your relationships, your work, your next chapter, it might look messy right now. It might not make sense yet. But that doesn’t mean it’s not coming together.
So Here’s What I’ll Leave You With
If things feel a little chaotic…If you’re in the middle of something and can’t quite see the outcome yet… What if nothing has gone wrong? What if you’re just in the part where it doesn’t look like much yet? Keep going. Take breaks when you need them. Trust the process a little more than your urge to rush it. And maybe… find your version of painting. Something that lets you step out of your head and into the moment. You might be surprised what it shows you.
If you’re feeling stuck in the “messy middle” of your life and ready to create something different, I’d love to help you shift your focus and reconnect with what you actually want.
