The Walls We Build: Why Protection Isn’t Power

There’s a woman I’ve been working with who has lived through more than her fair share of trauma. Life has asked her to carry heavy things, and for years, she did what many of us do: she built walls around herself. Walls of protection. Walls of distance. Walls meant to keep her safe from pain.
On the surface, it worked. Those walls kept the world at arm’s length. They allowed her to move forward, to survive. But as the years passed, she began to feel stuck. The walls that once protected her now felt like a prison, keeping not just hurt out, but also joy, love, and connection.
Sound familiar?
Most of us, in one way or another, build walls. Maybe they don’t look like hers. Maybe your wall is perfectionism. Maybe it’s a sharp tongue. Maybe it’s silence. Maybe it’s pretending you don’t care when deep down, you do. We build these strategies because, at some point, they worked. They protected us. They kept us afloat in hard times.
But here’s the truth my client is discovering, and maybe you need this reminder too: you no longer need protection when you finally realize your power.
Carl Jung said the real question isn’t “Why is this happening to me?” but “What does this want me to remember?”
For her, the remembering was this:
Her scars weren’t flaws—they were her signature.
Her pain wasn’t a punishment—it was the doorway.
Her walls weren’t power—they were fear disguised as strength.
And isn’t that something we all need to hear?
Because every single one of us has a story that hurt us. Every single one of us has moments where protection felt like the only option. But the doorway to the life we truly want doesn’t open by building higher walls. It opens by lowering them. By allowing ourselves to step into vulnerability, presence, and connection, and discover we are stronger, freer, and safer than we ever believed.
Power doesn’t come from hiding. Power comes from remembering who you are.
This client’s journey isn’t just her story; it’s all of ours. Wherever you’ve been, whatever walls you’ve built, you get to choose today whether you keep living behind them or whether you open the gate and step into something greater.
And when you do, you’ll discover what she is discovering now: You are the pearl. You are the signature. You are the power.
