The Prayer Shawl That Changed the Way I See Life

As I've been putting the finishing touches on my new Showing Up Fully program, I've found myself reflecting on moments throughout my life that quietly shaped the way I see the world.
It's funny how memories work. Sometimes they sit quietly in the background for years, only to reappear exactly when you need them.
One of those memories came rushing back to me this week. Our son was about five years old, and I was shopping for a bunk bed for his room. While walking through the store, something completely unexpected caught my attention. It wasn't furniture. It was a beautiful piece of artwork hanging on the wall. I couldn't explain why, but I knew I had to have it. It was more money than I had ever spent on a piece of art, so I called my husband, Paul. "I really love this," I told him. "What do you think?"
Without hesitation, he said, "If you love it, get it." The piece was too large to fit in my car, so Paul picked it up later that evening and brought it home. We hung it on the wall, stepped back, and admired it together.
At first, I only noticed what made it beautiful. The colors. The texture. The intricate weaving. But the longer I looked, the more I noticed something I hadn't seen in the store. Dark threads. Quite a few of them. "I didn't even notice those," I remember saying. Paul walked over, looked at it for a moment, smiled, and said something so simple that I've carried it with me ever since. "It's like our life. We have dark moments and we have beautiful moments, and when you put it all together... it's perfect."
I don't know that he realized how deeply those words would stay with me. Later, I learned that what we had purchased was actually a prayer shawl, a beautifully woven tapestry where every thread had been intentionally placed. Not just the bright ones. The dark ones too.
We Judge Our Lives One Thread at a Time
So often, we evaluate our lives by looking at a single thread.
The divorce.
The diagnosis.
The loss.
The mistake.
The rejection.
The season that didn't go according to plan.
We decide that one experience means something about who we are or where our life is headed.
But imagine standing two inches away from a tapestry. You'd only see individual threads. Some would seem out of place. Some would appear messy. Some might even make you wonder what the artist was thinking. It's only when you step back that the picture begins to make sense. Life works the same way. The moments that once felt like they were unraveling everything often become the very moments that weave together the strongest, wisest, most compassionate parts of who we become.
Showing Up Fully Means Accepting Every Thread
One of the biggest lessons I hope people take away from Showing Up Fully is that healing doesn't require erasing your past. It requires changing your relationship with it. You don't have to pretend painful things were enjoyable. You don't have to call heartbreak a gift while you're living through it.
But over time, you may discover that what felt like it was breaking you was quietly building something within you.
Resilience.
Compassion.
Courage.
Patience.
Wisdom.
Those qualities rarely grow in the easy seasons. They're woven in the difficult ones.
You're Still Weaving
This is my favorite part. Your tapestry isn't finished. You're still weaving it. Every conversation. Every decision. Every time you choose forgiveness over resentment. Presence over distraction. Trust over fear. Hope over certainty. You're adding another thread. And one day, you'll step back and realize something beautiful.
Your life wasn't made meaningful because it was perfect. It became beautiful because every thread, light and dark, found its place. Maybe that's what Paul saw all those years ago. And maybe that's what I needed to remember while creating this program. Because Showing Up Fully isn't about waiting until every thread is bright before you begin living. It's about embracing the whole tapestry. It's about recognizing that your story hasn't been ruined by the difficult chapters. It's been shaped by them.
And perhaps, just perhaps... When you put it all together... It's perfect.
Ready to Start Weaving the Next Chapter?
Your story isn't defined by a single thread. Every experience, both the beautiful and the difficult, has shaped who you are. But here's the exciting part... You're still weaving. If you're ready to stop living from old patterns and start intentionally creating the life you truly want, I'd love to walk that journey with you.
