Letting Go of the Need for Approval, Especially from the Ones You Love Most

There’s a unique kind of pain that comes from feeling like you’re never quite enough for the people who raised you. You shift, shape, and shrink yourself… hoping this version of you, this edited-down, "palatable" you, might finally be the one they accept. But even then, it doesn’t feel like enough. You see it in their eyes, hear it in their tone, feel it in every pause.
One of my clients recently described it like this:
“Even in family photos, I can feel their disapproval. It’s in their posture, their smiles that don’t quite reach me. It’s exhausting trying to win something I don’t think they’re willing to give.”
Whew. That hits deep, doesn’t it?
For many of us, the desire for parental approval is rooted in childhood survival. We needed their acceptance then. But as adults, continuing to chase that approval becomes a leash around our necks—a leash we’re allowed to release.
It’s not about cutting them out. It’s not about denying that we want love. It’s about loving ourselves enough to stop handing them the pen and letting them write our worth.
It’s about standing in our own reflection and saying,
“I see you. You’re whole. You’re good. You’re enough—even if they never say it.”
This is the kind of healing work we do in hypnotherapy. We gently unhook from the patterns that keep us small. We release the belief that we have to prove ourselves. We remember who we were before we learned to doubt it.
And from there, we create peace .Peace with ourselves. And sometimes, peace with them, not because they changed, but because we did.
If this resonates with you… if you’re ready to stop seeking approval and start standing in your truth, I’d love to support you.
